INDIANAPOLIS – Detroit sophomore Ryan Leahy and Youngstown State senior Heidi Schlegel have been named the Horizon League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Month for January. January marks the second-straight month Schlegel has obtained the honor.

As a pre-med major at Detroit, Leahy holds a 3.95 grade point average as a member of the men’s track and field team. The sophomore was named to the Horizon League Fall Academic Honor Roll and tabbed conference All-Academic Team honors for cross country.

During indoor track and field competition in January, Leahy won two races in the 3,00 meter run. He reached personal records in both wins, with his top time clocking in at 8:36.39 to rank sixth in Titans’ history. Throughout the Horizon League, Leahy holds the fifth-fastest 3,000 meter time recorded so far this season. In addition, he also set a personal record in the mile run during the month.

After her first semester in graduate school as an interdisciplinary communications major, Schlegel earned a 4.0 GPA. The fifth-year senior graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.73 GPA in the Spring of 2014 as a middle childhood education major. Recently, the senior was announced as one of 30 Division I women’s basketball players in the country to be named a Senior CLASS Award candidate. Schlegel earned academic All-Horizon League honors and tabbed League Scholar-Athlete of the Month twice in the 2013-14 academic year. Schlegel has been a member of the Dean’s list at Youngstown State and Horizon League Honor Roll each semester she’s been eligible.

Throughout the first month of the year, Schlegel averaged 18.3 points and 9.9 rebounds for the Penguins. The senior shot 49.5 percent from the field and ranked second in the League in double-doubles, third in rebounds and fifth in scoring. Schlegel was named Horizon League Player of the Week on January 19 after a 25-point, 18-rebound double-double performance against Cleveland State. In addition, she also tabbed 20-point games facing Oakland and Milwaukee and collected double-doubles versus Wright State and Detroit.

Youngstown State women’s basketball team is on the road at Milwaukee tonight for a 8:00 p.m. ET tip-off with the game streamed live on ESPN3. The Detroit men’s track and field team is set to compete in the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up Friday, February 20.
